The PDX Social History Guide offers an insightful exploration of the individuals and locations that form a vital part of Portland's cultural heritage. Portland has historically been home to diverse ethnic groups, including Native American, African American, Chinese, Japanese, Greek, and Jewish communities. Due to urban development, many of these communities now have few physical remnants of their former neighborhoods. As a result, both first-time visitors and long-time residents may have limited awareness of the city's rich historical tapestry.

This application systematically surfaces these stories through several features:

<li>Theme-specific illustrations complemented by historical photographs</li>
<li>Concise textual summaries for users who prefer to avoid audio or are exploring without headphones</li>
<li>Interactive maps guiding users to historic sites of significance</li>
<li>Embedded links for further reading on various topics related to Portland’s history</li>
</ul>

Developed by the Portland-based non-profit organization Know Your City, the content is supported by illustrations and icons crafted by Kate Bingaman-Burt, contributing a distinctive, artisanal aesthetic to the app.
